UICOMP Pre-Med Surgical Immersion Experience

The UICOMP Pre-Med Surgical Immersion Experience is open to highly motivated undergraduates who are interested in an immersive experience with clinical and simulation-based surgical modules and hands on activities to enhance preparation for medical school.
During this week long course, students will experience several different surgical specialties. The focus will be on neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery and interventional cardiology, general surgery, interventional radiology, among others. Course material will include education provided by practicing physicians and other medical professionals.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about and practice hands on activities including: an overview of clinical skills, professionalism and patient information safety, suturing, prepping for a sterile operating room, brain dissection, assorted neurology skills, cardiology overview, cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology, VR learning, virtual laparoscopic skills, and cadaver that has been re-perfused for surgical realism. All culminating in a final day filled with professional lecture and clinical immersion for a day-in-the-life experience.
